Halcyon Story
The Greek Goddess Alcyone (or Halcyon), daughter of Aeolus, God of the winds, married the Mortal King Ceyx, who tragically drowned during a storm while at sea. Such was Alcyones love for Ceyx, and her despair at his passing, that she threw herself into the ocean after him.

The Gods were moved by the tragedy, and so they transformed both Alcyone and Ceyx into birds, so they could roam the skies together for eternity. The God Aeolus kept the winds calm for a two-week period, enabling the lovebirds to build a nest and lay their eggs on the calm waters.

Over the centuries, the term Halcyon has been associated with both the kingfisher, and a mythical bird that nests on the mysteriously calm seas around the time of the winter solstice. Ancient Mariners believed that they were safe from storm and wind during these Halcyon days. This Greek myth has even found its place in modern science, and the calm eye of the hurricane is referred to as "The Halcyon."
